To further boost the research and knowledge transfer programmes of HKBU, which are two of the key strategic goals in the University's Vision 2020 blueprint, and to enable the University to build a bridgehead for launching new initiatives in the Yangtze River Delta, the University has decided to establish the HKBU Changshu Research Institute (CRI) in the Changshu Economic Development Zone (CEDZ) of the Jiangsu province. In this regard, the University has set up a wholly-foreign- owned-enterprise on the Chinese mainland to operate the CRI. The construction of the building is expected to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2013. On completion, the University will make use of the space to conduct research in Chinese medicine drug discovery, new materials, etc. It will also take up contract research offered by enterprises in the region, and offer postgraduate and professional training programmes for executives in the neigbouring cities.
GAO serves as the liaison office between the University and the relevant government bodies and business enterprises in the CEDZ on matters related to the project and, within the University, the coordinator among departments/offices participating in the project.
